Outside of EMD's FT freighter of 1939, the GP30 has probably spawned more articles and coverage
in the hobby press than any other locomotive builders's model. The 30's distinctive styling
and unmistakable chant of a V16-567 power-plant made the four-axle EMD freight hauler a fan
favorite soon after its introduction during July 1961.
In terms of numbers, production of the four-axle EMD model stopped at 948 locomotives; two of which were built by General Motors Diesel Division, the Canadian subsidiary. Although buyers of the 2250-hp locomotive were predominantly Class 1, one went to short-line operator Toledo Peoria & Western (#700) and nine to industry's Phelps-Dodge (#24-32). The decades-long popularity of the 2250-horsepower EMD can be found in the hundreds, perhaps thousands of railfan photographs that depict GP30s at work on mainlines across the United States, and to a much lesser degree in neighboring Canada, Although mostly relegated to serve on the rails of today's American short-lines, the GP30 has lost little of its luster or favor.
