KCS's Bicentennial Celebration Locomotive
KCS SD40 photo here
During the United States's Bicentennial celebration in the 1970s, domestic railroads and industry responded by painting more than 300 individual locomotives in R/W/B-inspired schemes. There was an occasional exception, such as KCS's #642. The 3000-hp SD40-2 was painted in a rather extra-ordinary scheme of multiples colors. The only thing missing from this cheerful scene is some fireworks. (Joe Blackwell photo at Shreveport, LA in July 1976)
