Burlington Northern 5047
BN 5047 photo here
During the mid and late 1990s, the prospects were slim of encountering one of BNs white-faced, pin-striped C30-7s during a day of railfanning on a BN mainline. The reason is less than 11% of the 5000, 5100 & 5500 series GEs are so painted, and an extremely small number of those carry red numberboards, similar to those carried by 5047 pictured here. Initially, the thought was the red signifies a loco upgraded to 3300 or 3600 horsepower; it was later suggested that the red boards meant special oil tests.
