Burlington Northern 3551

A 1987 motive power study by BN showed there would a future need for 250 4-axle locomotives (both medium and high horsepower); thus a major remanufacturing program was initiated, with EMD as one of the major suppliers. The program entailed rebuilt diesel engines, installation of improved AR1O alternators, enhanced traction motors; upgraded cooling system, rebuilt trucks and carbody repairs. Three months after being rebuilt, BN 3551 emerged from LaGrange as one of the new GP40Es. It is seen here leading an empty coal drag through Walbridge, OH on 11 February 1990. The loco was built originally as CB&Q 174. (R. Craig photo)
